What a proper service covers
Filters, indoor and outdoor coils, the drain and tray, refrigerant charge, electrical connections and a performance check: the full 21-point inspection. Dust and humidity load systems up over a Sydney summer and winter; servicing clears it before it becomes a fault.
How often, honestly
Once a year is the residential minimum and protects most manufacturer warranties. Twice yearly, before summer and before winter, is ideal. High-usage commercial sites benefit from quarterly visits, usually under a maintenance contract.

How often should I service my air conditioner?
Residential: at least yearly, ideally twice (pre-summer and pre-winter). Commercial high-usage sites: quarterly. Regular servicing keeps efficiency up, protects the warranty and catches small faults before they grow.
Does servicing actually save money?
Yes, in two ways: a clean, correctly charged system draws noticeably less power, and small faults get caught before they take out a compressor. Skipped servicing is the most common reason warranty claims get knocked back.
What can I do myself between services?
Wash or vacuum the indoor filters every month or two, keep leaves and plants clear of the outdoor unit, and run fan-only mode occasionally to dry the unit out and discourage mould.
