Air conditioning in Western Sydney

Penrith, Blacktown, Parramatta and right across the west. The inland heat changes what you actually need, here's how we size, recommend and quote for it.

The heat

Out west you size for the heat, not a Sydney average

Without the coast's sea breeze, Western Sydney summers regularly push past 40°C, often a good 10°C hotter than the eastern beaches on the very same day. Penrith is routinely one of the hottest places in Greater Sydney.

That extra heat load is real: a unit sized for a Bondi apartment will sit there flat out and still lose the room in a Penrith living area. We size every job for the inland climate so the system actually holds temperature on the worst days, not just the mild ones.

The homes

Mostly freestanding houses, often double-storey

Around 85% of homes out here are separate freestanding houses (ABS Census: 81% in Blacktown, 92% in Penrith), and plenty are double-storey on a proper block. That’s the opposite of the coastal apartment belt.

For homes like these, ducted usually fits best: one system, zoned so you only cool the rooms you’re using and keep temperatures even upstairs and down. Where ducted isn’t on the cards, a few well-placed high-capacity splits do the job.

Running costs

What it costs to run in Western Sydney

In a Western Sydney home, air conditioning is usually the single biggest item on the summer power bill, it runs harder and longer in the heat. These are official GEMS energy figures for the average climate zone, whose reference location is Richmond, here in Sydney’s west, costed at the median Endeavour Energy network rate the west actually pays.

FAQs

Western Sydney air conditioning FAQs

Do I need a bigger air conditioner in Western Sydney than near the coast?

Usually yes. Without the coastal sea breeze the west runs hotter, often around 10°C above the beaches on a bad day, with summer highs past 40°C. We size for that inland heat load so the system holds temperature on the worst days, not just the mild ones. A unit specced for a coastal home tends to run flat out here and never quite catch up.

Is ducted or a split system better for a Western Sydney home?

Most homes out here are freestanding houses, often double-storey, which suits ducted: one system, zoned so you only cool the rooms in use and keep temperatures even upstairs and down. Where ducted is not practical, a couple of high-capacity splits do the job. We recommend based on your actual layout, not a default.
